"Meet the Author" Series
Upcoming Meet the Author Events:
Meet the Author Wendy Newell Dyer
EVENT DATE: July 19, 2019, 6:00pm
Peabody Memorial Library
After her husband’s prostate cancer diagnosis in 1996, Wendy Newell Dyer went to college to study literature and professional writing. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maine at Machias in 2003. She then became full-time caregiver to her husband who died in 2007. Together they homeschooled their three sons through high school.
Wendy started her writing career as a freelance writer/photographer for the Downeast Coastal Press and the Machias Valley News Observer. As a member of the Passamaquoddy tribe, she testified before the Maine Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2015, sharing her adoption story and her fight to find her way back to her cultural roots. She helped write educational materials for the Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer and last year won a national writing contest sponsored by the Prostate Cancer Foundation and judged by actress Kristin Bell for a piece on care giving.
Wendy's story, "A Warrior's Homecoming" was published in Dawnland Voices: An Anthology of Indigenous Writers from New England in 2014. She wrote two stories for the online literary magazine Dawnland Voices 2.0. Another story, "Homeschooling Through Difficult Times" was published in Homeschooling Today magazine and two of her stories have recently been been published in two Chicken Soup for the Soul books.
When she’s not writing, she enjoys traveling to see her three grandsons, climbing mountains, working on her property, and taking long hikes with her black lab Jackson Liam.
Books will be available for purchase and light refreshments will be served.
Event is free. Contact the library for more information at 497-3003.
