Friends of the Library
The Friends of Peabody Memorial Library is a non-profit organization that assists the library through fundraising activities and volunteerism so that the library can better reach its goals in serving the community. We invite you to learn more about Friends of the Library and welcome you to join us as "Friends" in this worthwhile community effort
Friends of the Peabody Memorial Library are planning several fund raisers for the benefit of the library. Friends currently fund programs presented by our librarian, Heidi Hinkley, and help greatly in providing funding for books and materials. Recently we agreed to fund upgrades for the printer, the circulation computer, and to replace two outdated desktops along with new headphones for all public access computers.
Please consider joining the Friends of the Peabody Memorial Library. Our organization benefits every person in our communities by helping the library to grow and improve its services. We are a local organization helping local folks.

Annual Membership Drive - June 2016
The Friends of Peabody Memorial Library was established in December, 2006 - almost a decade ago - at a time when the library was in much need of help. In the ensuing years as an active 501c (3) charitable organization, the Friends’ have assisted the library in many ways. Perhaps most importantly, Friends’ have provided the funds for programs, services and needed equipment which would not have been possible given the library’s limited financial resources. Some of these items include: All Children’s programs – Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Summer and Winter Reading, Storytime, Bess the Book Bus and more. Equipment - such as new and replacement computers, laptops, Kindles, printers; Apollo - the automated card catalog program; the Maine Info Net Download library subscription, a projector and screen for showing movies, an outside book drop and more. Contributions to help support Music in the Library program. Many, many new books as well as magazine and Bangor Daily News subscriptions.
The community - especially our youngsters – benefits from these programs, none of which are funded with your tax dollars. A core group of active Friends’ members have consistently worked each year to raise these funds while the annual membership drive has also provided a portion of the funding. It is with great concern that the organization now finds itself at a serious juncture. The group of active members has continued to shrink to the point that it can no longer undertake the type of fund raising done in the past. There are currently not enough members willing to serve as officers necessary to lead the organization going forward. These concerns have been shared recently at a meeting with the Library Board of Trustees. The library will not be able to provide the same level of programs and services without the Friends’ financial backing. At the request of the Library Board, the Friends’ Executive Committee has agreed to continue functioning at a scaled down level for one more fiscal year (July 2016-17).
However, we will not be able to continue without more help from the community. We desperately need more active members in order to survive as an organization. Please consider joining our group. If you are already a member, please continue your support by renewing your membership.
You are cordially invited to attend the Annual Membership meeting, Thursday July 14, 2016 at 1 pm.
